4 LPA in hand salary: what ₹4 LPA actually pays per month
FY 2025-26, new tax regime · Indicative — your exact structure varies by employer
The common graduate-trainee band at mid-tier services firms and consultancies.
Where the money goes
The single most common surprise in a first offer is that ₹4 LPA divided by twelve is ₹33,333, but the amount that lands in your bank account is closer to ₹29,300. The difference is not a deduction anyone hid from you — it is the gap between what the company spends and what it pays you, plus statutory deductions. Here is the full path, at a 40% basic:
| Component | Per year | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Annual CTC | ₹4,00,000 | ₹33,333 |
| − Employer PF (12% of basic, inside CTC) | −₹19,200 | −₹1,600 |
| − Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic) | −₹7,696 | −₹641 |
| = Gross salary | ₹3,73,104 | ₹31,092 |
| − Employee PF (12% of basic) | −₹19,200 | −₹1,600 |
| − Professional tax | −₹2,400 | −₹200 |
| − Income tax (new regime) — nil at this band | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| = In hand | ₹3,51,504 | ₹29,292 |
Two of these are worth understanding rather than resenting. Employer PF is your money — it goes into your provident fund account every month and you keep it. Gratuity is a provision the company sets aside against a payment due after five years of service. Both are real value; neither is monthly cash.
Why the figure is a range, not one number
Your basic salary is usually 35–50% of the package, it is set by the employer, and you almost never get to choose it. It moves your in-hand meaningfully, because provident fund is calculated on basic rather than on the whole salary — so a higher basic means a lower monthly amount and a larger PF balance.
| If your basic is | Monthly in-hand | Monthly PF (yours + employer's) |
|---|---|---|
| 35% of CTC | ₹29,772 | ₹2,800 |
| 40% of CTC | ₹29,292 | ₹3,200 |
| 45% of CTC | ₹28,812 | ₹3,600 |
| 50% of CTC | ₹28,332 | ₹4,000 |
A lower basic is not automatically the better offer. The right-hand column is money you keep — it simply arrives later. Run your own basic percentage in the calculator if your offer letter states it.

What 4 LPA supports month to month
Around ₹29,000 a month covers rent in a shared flat, food, travel and a phone bill in Hyderabad, Chennai or Pune with room to save a little. It is the first band where saving and living alone are simultaneously plausible, though not in the most expensive metro pockets.
₹4 LPA is where graduate engineer trainee and analyst offers cluster at several large employers, and it is the point where an in-hand salary starts comfortably covering independent living in most Indian cities rather than only just covering it.
It is also a useful psychological line for a different reason: it is roughly the band at which the tiered mass recruiters stop being the only realistic option. At ₹4 LPA and above you are also competing for roles at product firms, GCCs and specialised tracks, which have different hiring processes — less standardised aptitude testing, more depth on projects and fundamentals.

The band is decided before the offer exists

How much is 4 LPA per month in hand?
Roughly ₹28,300–₹29,800 a month, depending on how your basic salary is structured and assuming no variable component. The spread exists because a higher basic means more provident fund is deducted — the same 4 LPA package pays less in hand at a 50% basic than at a 35% basic. Use the calculator with your own offer's basic percentage for a closer figure.
Why is 4 LPA in hand not simply ₹33,333 a month?
Because CTC is what the company spends, not what it pays you. Employer provident fund (₹1,600 a month at a 40% basic) and the gratuity provision (₹641 a month) sit inside CTC but never reach your account. Your own PF contribution and professional tax then come out of the remainder. On a 4 LPA package that gap is about ₹4,041 a month.
Does a 4 LPA package pay income tax?
No. Under the new tax regime for FY 2025-26, the ₹75,000 standard deduction and the Section 87A rebate on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh mean a 4 LPA package attracts no income tax. Your deductions are provident fund and professional tax only. This is indicative — confirm the current year's rules.
Is variable pay included in these figures?
No, and that is deliberate. Variable pay is paid quarterly or annually against performance ratings, and companies commonly pay only part of it. Every figure on this page assumes a fully fixed package. If your offer carries variable pay, subtract it from the CTC first and read the band below your headline number — the calculator has a field for exactly this.
Every figure here is computed with the same assumptions as our in-hand salary calculator: employer PF at 12% of basic, gratuity at 4.81% of basic, professional tax of ₹200 a month, and new-regime slabs for FY 2025-26 with the ₹75,000 standard deduction and the Section 87A rebate. Companies structure CTC differently and tax rules change — treat this as a close estimate, not a payslip, and confirm against your own offer letter.
