3.4 LPA in hand salary: what ₹3.4 LPA actually pays per month
FY 2025-26, new tax regime · Indicative — your exact structure varies by employer
The classic mass-recruiter entry band — TCS Ninja territory, and the most-searched fresher package in India.
Where the money goes
The single most common surprise in a first offer is that ₹3.4 LPA divided by twelve is ₹28,333, but the amount that lands in your bank account is closer to ₹24,900. The difference is not a deduction anyone hid from you — it is the gap between what the company spends and what it pays you, plus statutory deductions. Here is the full path, at a 40% basic:
| Component | Per year | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Annual CTC | ₹3,40,000 | ₹28,333 |
| − Employer PF (12% of basic, inside CTC) | −₹16,320 | −₹1,360 |
| − Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic) | −₹6,542 | −₹545 |
| = Gross salary | ₹3,17,138 | ₹26,428 |
| − Employee PF (12% of basic) | −₹16,320 | −₹1,360 |
| − Professional tax | −₹2,400 | −₹200 |
| − Income tax (new regime) — nil at this band | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| = In hand | ₹2,98,418 | ₹24,868 |
Two of these are worth understanding rather than resenting. Employer PF is your money — it goes into your provident fund account every month and you keep it. Gratuity is a provision the company sets aside against a payment due after five years of service. Both are real value; neither is monthly cash.
Why the figure is a range, not one number
Your basic salary is usually 35–50% of the package, it is set by the employer, and you almost never get to choose it. It moves your in-hand meaningfully, because provident fund is calculated on basic rather than on the whole salary — so a higher basic means a lower monthly amount and a larger PF balance.
| If your basic is | Monthly in-hand | Monthly PF (yours + employer's) |
|---|---|---|
| 35% of CTC | ₹25,276 | ₹2,380 |
| 40% of CTC | ₹24,868 | ₹2,720 |
| 45% of CTC | ₹24,460 | ₹3,060 |
| 50% of CTC | ₹24,052 | ₹3,400 |
A lower basic is not automatically the better offer. The right-hand column is money you keep — it simply arrives later. Run your own basic percentage in the calculator if your offer letter states it.

What 3.4 LPA supports month to month
Around ₹25,000 a month supports shared accommodation, food and travel in Hyderabad or Chennai with a small amount left over. In Bengaluru or Mumbai the rent share alone takes a much bigger bite. Most people at this band who save anything are either at home or splitting rent three ways.
₹3.4 LPA is the best-known fresher number in the country, because it is roughly what the largest volume hirers pay at their entry tier — TCS Ninja most famously, with Tech Mahindra and several others in the same neighbourhood. When lakhs of students receive a number in the same season, that number becomes the reference point everyone measures against.
The critical thing to understand about this band is that it is set by policy, not by your interview. It is a published band applied to a whole hiring cohort, which is why negotiating it almost never works and why your interviewer genuinely cannot change it. What the interview DOES decide, at several of these companies, is which band you land in at all — the same exam sitting that produces a ₹3.4 LPA offer can produce a ₹7 LPA one for a stronger performance in the advanced section.
So if this number feels low, the lever is not the offer conversation. It is the next exam.

The band is decided before the offer exists
At most large recruiters the same exam sitting decides which package you are even considered for — the harder section is the difference between the entry band and double it. Practise the tougher interview free with Phiny's AI.

Is ₹3.4 LPA the same as TCS Ninja?
The TCS Ninja band has been around ₹3.4 LPA, which is why the two get used interchangeably in student conversation. Treat the figure as indicative and confirm the number in your own offer letter — bands move between seasons, and the exact figure sometimes lands slightly either side of ₹3.4 LPA.
Can I get a higher package from the same exam?
At several mass recruiters, yes — that is the whole design. One test feeds multiple tiers: at TCS the same NQT sitting decides Ninja, Digital and Prime, and Cognizant, Wipro and others run comparable tiered tracks. Performance in the advanced or coding section is what separates them, so preparing for the harder section is the highest-leverage decision available to you before the offer exists.
How much is 3.4 LPA per month in hand?
Roughly ₹24,100–₹25,300 a month, depending on how your basic salary is structured and assuming no variable component. The spread exists because a higher basic means more provident fund is deducted — the same 3.4 LPA package pays less in hand at a 50% basic than at a 35% basic. Use the calculator with your own offer's basic percentage for a closer figure.
Why is 3.4 LPA in hand not simply ₹28,333 a month?
Because CTC is what the company spends, not what it pays you. Employer provident fund (₹1,360 a month at a 40% basic) and the gratuity provision (₹545 a month) sit inside CTC but never reach your account. Your own PF contribution and professional tax then come out of the remainder. On a 3.4 LPA package that gap is about ₹3,465 a month.
Does a 3.4 LPA package pay income tax?
No. Under the new tax regime for FY 2025-26, the ₹75,000 standard deduction and the Section 87A rebate on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh mean a 3.4 LPA package attracts no income tax. Your deductions are provident fund and professional tax only. This is indicative — confirm the current year's rules.
Is variable pay included in these figures?
No, and that is deliberate. Variable pay is paid quarterly or annually against performance ratings, and companies commonly pay only part of it. Every figure on this page assumes a fully fixed package. If your offer carries variable pay, subtract it from the CTC first and read the band below your headline number — the calculator has a field for exactly this.
Every figure here is computed with the same assumptions as our in-hand salary calculator: employer PF at 12% of basic, gratuity at 4.81% of basic, professional tax of ₹200 a month, and new-regime slabs for FY 2025-26 with the ₹75,000 standard deduction and the Section 87A rebate. Companies structure CTC differently and tax rules change — treat this as a close estimate, not a payslip, and confirm against your own offer letter.
