Part-Time Jobs in the UK for International Students (2026): Rules & Pay

Updated August 2026 · Not legal or immigration advice — gov.uk and your university's visa compliance team are the authority

The UK's student work rule is one of the most stable anywhere: degree-level Student-visa holders can generally work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time in official vacations. The trap isn't the hours — it's the part almost nobody tells you: the Student visa generally prohibits self-employment. Fiverr, Uber, freelancing platforms — off limits.

As always, orientation only: your visa conditions and gov.uk's official guidance are the authority, and your university's compliance team monitors this more actively than in most countries.

The rules, in plain language

QuestionThe general shape (verify on gov.uk)
Can I work?Yes — Student-visa holders on degree-level courses can generally work up to 20 hrs/week in term time, full-time in official vacations
What is banned?Self-employment and freelancing (Fiverr/Uber/contracting), professional sportsperson roles, and permanent full-time positions — the prohibition applies regardless of hours
What counts as term time?Your university defines it — masters programs often have NO long summer "vacation" because the dissertation counts as term. Check before assuming summer full-time is allowed
What do I need first?A National Insurance (NI) number for payroll — apply after arrival; employers verify right-to-work digitally via your share code
The hard lineExceeding 20 hours in any week or doing prohibited work is a visa breach — universities and employers report through the sponsor system, and it surfaces in future applications

What students actually earn

UK minimum wage runs on age bands, with the top band (21+) in the £11–12+/hr region recently — gov.uk lists the exact current rates. Typical student work: hospitality, retail, campus jobs, student-ambassador roles (usually the best-paying campus option), invigilation and tutoring.

The honest math: 20 hours at ~£11 is roughly £950 a month before deductions. Outside London that covers a real share of living costs; in London it covers noticeably less than half of a typical month. The UK's one-year masters is also brutally compressed — many students find even 15 hours unsustainable during dissertation season. Plan work income as a supplement, never as the funding plan.

Traps and rights

  • The freelancing ban catches good students: editing a friend's startup website for pay, selling notes online, weekend delivery riding — all self-employment, all prohibited on a Student visa. When an income idea isn't PAYE payroll, treat it as banned until your university's visa team says otherwise in writing.
  • "20 hours" means ANY week (usually Monday–Sunday) — two 12-hour agency shifts in one week is already a breach even if your monthly average looks fine.
  • You have full worker rights: minimum wage for your age band, payslips, holiday pay. Cash-in-hand below minimum wage is both exploitation and a paper-trail problem for your own future applications.
  • The Graduate Route (around two years of post-study work) has been the payoff of the UK path — it has been under policy review at various points, so verify its current shape on gov.uk before building your plan on it.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours can international students work in the UK?

Generally 20 hours per week during term time for degree-level Student-visa students, and full-time during official vacations — but your own visa conditions and your university's term dates govern. Masters dissertation periods usually count as term time, not vacation.

Can I freelance or do Uber/Deliveroo in the UK as a student?

Generally no — the Student visa prohibits self-employment, which is what platform gig work and freelancing are. This is the most commonly broken rule among international students and it is genuinely enforced. Stick to employed (PAYE) roles.

Can part-time work cover my UK living costs?

Outside London it covers a meaningful share; in London, substantially less than half. It never covers international tuition. The one-year masters workload also limits realistic hours more than students expect — arrive funded.

What is an NI number and when do I get one?

The National Insurance number is the UK's payroll/tax ID — apply free after arrival (gov.uk); you can typically evidence right-to-work digitally while it processes. Never pay anyone to "arrange" it.

Do my work hours affect the Graduate Route later?

Legal term-time work doesn't hurt. Breaches do — hour violations and prohibited self-employment sit on your record and can undermine the post-study application that is the whole point of the UK route. Verify the Graduate Route's current terms on gov.uk.
