TCS vs Zoho for Freshers (2026): One Screens You Before It Sees You, the Other Refuses To
Updated August 2026 · Packages indicative — confirm on each company's official careers page
Apply to both, and understand that they are not the same kind of opportunity. One hires tens of thousands a year through a standardised funnel; the other hires a small fraction of that and turns most applicants away. Treating them as interchangeable options on a shortlist misreads both.
The structural difference matters more than the packages. TCS applies eligibility filters — an aggregate threshold, no active backlogs — automatically, before a human reads anything. Zoho hires on a programming test that does not know where you studied, and does not gate on college tier, marks or degree. For a student filtered out elsewhere, that is not a marginal difference; it is the difference between having a route and not having one.
On money: TCS runs from Ninja at about ₹3.4 LPA through Digital at around ₹7 LPA to Prime at roughly ₹9–11.5 LPA, decided largely in one assessment. Zoho's main engineering role sits at an indicative ₹4.5–8 LPA, so it comfortably clears the TCS base band and overlaps the middle. Neither is obviously ahead across the range, which means the money should not be what decides this.
What should decide it is the work and the odds. Product development means owning features that real users touch, with skills that compound quickly for someone who already codes. Services means breadth of domains, structured training, an enormous internal job market, and an allocation you do not control. The honest asymmetry: the TCS route is far more likely to produce an offer, and the Zoho route is far more likely to teach you quickly if you clear it.
Packages, side by side
| TCS | Package | Zoho | Package |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ninja | ~₹3.4 LPA | Member Technical Staff (software developer) | Indicative ₹4.5–8 LPA |
| Digital | ~₹7 LPA | Zoho Schools of Learning | Stipend during training, then a role on completion |
| Prime | ~₹9–11.5 LPA | Quality / automation engineer | Indicative, below the developer band |
| Technical support / customer-facing engineering | Indicative ₹3–5 LPA |
How the exams differ
| TCS NQT | Zoho Programming Test |
|---|---|
| Foundation — Numerical Ability: Arithmetic, number series, data interpretation (~25 min) | Programming round one: Basic to moderate problems — strings, arrays, number logic — usually written and timed, sometimes on paper |
| Foundation — Verbal Ability: Reading comprehension, grammar, sentence completion (~25 min) | Programming round two: Harder problems requiring working, complete programs rather than fragments; this is where most candidates are eliminated |
| Foundation — Reasoning Ability: Puzzles, series, coding-decoding, visual reasoning (~25 min) | Advanced programming / application round: In many cycles a longer task — build something functional, often over several hours, sometimes an end-to-end small application |
| Advanced — Quantitative & Reasoning: Harder aptitude for Digital/Prime consideration (~25 min) | Technical interview: Your code from the earlier rounds, core CS, and how you reason through a problem out loud |
| Advanced — Coding: 2 programming problems in C/C++/Java/Python/Perl (~55 min) | HR round: Motivation, relocation to Tamil Nadu, and long-term intent — Zoho hires with retention in mind |
Choose TCS if…
- You want the highest probability of an offer. Volume hiring with a standardised process is genuinely more winnable than a selective programming bar, and having a job matters more than the logo on it.
- You can clear the Advanced section — the upper tiers are where TCS beats almost every mass recruiter and where this comparison tilts firmly its way.
- Location flexibility matters: the widest Indian office network, including tier-2 cities, against an employer concentrated in Tamil Nadu.
- You want structured training and a very large internal job market to move around in later.
Choose Zoho if…
- Your college, CGPA or degree is filtering you out elsewhere. This is the significant one — a programming test that ignores credentials is a genuine route where eligibility gates have closed others, and our Zoho guide covers the entry paths in full.
- You already code well and want depth quickly. Owning product features that users actually touch compounds skill faster than most first-year services allocations do.
- You would rather be assessed on what you can build than on an aggregate you cannot change.
- You are comfortable relocating to Tamil Nadu, including offices outside the major metros, and want product work rather than client delivery.

Which is easier to get into?
TCS, by a wide margin, and that is a statement about volume rather than about you. It hires at enormous scale through a standardised funnel, while Zoho takes a small intake and eliminates at each programming round. The practical consequence is that Zoho should be an application you make and prepare for seriously, not a plan you depend on — and being turned down there says little, since most strong candidates are. Apply to both and let the outcomes decide.
My CGPA is low and my college is unknown. Does that change the answer?
Substantially, and this is the most useful thing on the page for you. TCS applies an aggregate threshold and a no-active-backlogs condition automatically, before anyone reads your application — so below the line, the application does not arrive. Zoho hires on a programming test that does not know where you studied and does not gate on college tier, marks or degree. If credentials are what is filtering you out elsewhere, this is a route that exists precisely because that filter is absent. It is still a hard test; it is simply a test of something you can change by practising.
Which one pays more?
Neither across the range. TCS runs from about ₹3.4 LPA at Ninja through around ₹7 LPA at Digital to roughly ₹9–11.5 LPA at Prime. Zoho's main engineering role sits at an indicative ₹4.5–8 LPA — comfortably above the TCS base and overlapping the middle. So Zoho beats the outcome most TCS freshers actually get, while the TCS top tier beats Zoho. Since the ranges overlap this much, money is the wrong axis for this decision. Figures are indicative and move — confirm against your own offer.
How different is the work, really?
Different in kind. Product development means working on software the company owns, with features that reach real users and feedback that comes back to you — which tends to compound skills quickly, because you see consequences. Services delivery means client projects assigned by allocation: sometimes excellent, sometimes maintenance on an ageing system, and not something you choose. Our TCS versus Capgemini comparison works through why allocation shapes a services career more than the employer does. The trade is depth and ownership against breadth and scale.
Should I reject a TCS offer while waiting for a Zoho result?
No. Holding an offer while another process runs is normal; declining one for a maybe is the classic expensive mistake, and it happens every season. Accept what you have, keep the other process running if the timing allows, and only move for something written and clearly better. Our page on negotiating or accepting a first offer covers this more fully — the short version is that a first job is a starting position, not a verdict, and the people who trade a real offer for a hoped-for one usually end up with neither.
Does a product company make it easier to switch later?
It helps, but less than the internet suggests, and services does not close the door. What decides a later switch is demonstrable engineering — algorithms you have practised, systems you have built, problems you can talk about in depth. A product role tends to generate that material as a by-product of the job; a services role often does not, which is why people who move out of services are the ones who kept building on their own time from month one. Either route works; only one of them does the work for you.
What about location?
A genuine consideration. Zoho is concentrated in Tamil Nadu, including offices outside the major metros, so for a student from AP or Telangana this generally means relocating — our Chennai guide covers what that involves, including the language question and the cost. TCS has the widest Indian network including tier-2 cities, which makes a posting near home more plausible. Weigh the cost of the city alongside the package rather than after it.
How should I prepare differently for each?
The overlap is smaller than for two mass recruiters. TCS rewards a broad aptitude and core-CS cycle plus enough coding to clear the Advanced section. Zoho rewards actual programming ability under elimination pressure — practising problems until you can write correct, working code quickly, and being able to explain your solution out loud. If you are serious about both, treat the coding practice as the shared foundation and add aptitude on top; if you are serious only about the second, the aptitude cycle matters much less than the hours spent writing code.
I am in the 2027 batch. What should I do now?
Write code consistently, starting now — it is the only preparation that serves both the TCS upper tiers and a programming-test employer, and it is the one thing that cannot be assembled in a final semester. Run one aptitude cycle alongside it for the mass recruiters. Build one project properly, end to end, because it is what makes you credible in a product interview and interesting in any interview. And if your credentials are working against you elsewhere, note that a company hiring on a test is exactly where that stops mattering, and prepare accordingly.
